Late Race Restarts Force Hutchens to 13th Place Finish at Bristol April 20, 2016

As a 10 year-old kid walking inside Bristol Motor Speedway, one day competing on the high banks was the only thing Trey Hutchens could think of. After this past weekend’s “PittLite 125,” the seventeen-year old High School Senior can say he has competed at Bristol Motor Speedway on three different occasions.

“It is pretty humbling walking in to the race track and seeing the “Last Great Coliseum” banner. Bristol will always have a special place in my heart,” Hutchens put simply.

The weekend for Hutchens started off like any race car driver wish it would, fast. He recorded the 6th fastest practice time in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East final practice and eventually parlayed those efforts in to a 16th place starting position in the 30 car field.

“Although the qualifying effort might not have shown it, I was extremely pleased with the Heintz Performance Chevrolet on Friday in race trim. The K&N series competition is stout, a tenth of a second faster lap time in qualifying would have placed us in 4th, but instead, I had a little work to do during the race.”

Hutchens confidence in his race car translated on Saturday when he raced well inside the Top-10 for a majority of the race and found himself in the 7th position with very few laps remaining. Although a race high, the 7th position placed Hutchens on the dreaded inside groove at a race track where the preferred line is right against the outside wall. After a struggle to find his way back to the top of the race track and late race contact, Hutchens found himself finishing in the 13th position.

“Although the finish wasn’t remotely indicative of the race car Dad and I brought to the race track, I still am able to walk out of Bristol with a smile knowing we had speed that could have finished in the Top-5 if the stars had aligned late in the race. After Mobile and Bristol, I am extremely pleased with the direction my race team’s K&N East program is headed.”
